Authentic 1658 Paris edition of De Alimentorum Facultatibus by Symeon (Simeon) Seth, a Byzantine physician and scholar. An important early work on dietetics and the medicinal/properties of foods, with text printed in Greek and Latin.

Edited and translated into Latin by Martinus Bogdanus (Martin Bogdan). Published in Paris (“Lutetiae Parisiorum”) by the press of the Widow of Mathurin Dupuis in 1658.

The volume retains an early full calf leather binding with an ornate gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, red leather title label reading “S. SETHI / DE / ALIMEN…,” and colorful marbled endpapers.

The text concludes correctly on numbered page 174 with “FINIS,” followed by blank leaves. Based on comparison with bibliographic records, the volume appears complete; however, it has not been professionally collated leaf-by-leaf and is therefore being described as apparently complete.

Condition:

Antiquarian condition with wear consistent with age. Leather binding shows rubbing, scuffing, surface loss and wear, particularly along the boards, edges and spine extremities. Gilt decoration remains attractive and substantially visible. Marbled endpapers show age and wear. Interior paper has expected toning, spotting/foxing and occasional marks associated with a book of this age. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.

A scarce 17th-century medical/dietetic work with particularly attractive Greek and Latin typography and an ornate early leather binding.
